TEACHING SELF-INDEPENDENT TO CHILDREN

Self-independent is fundamental in life. It denotes the condition of being free from control, dependence, and interference from anybody. Being independent means readiness and commitment to stand on one’s self. Accordingly a belief that self-sufficiency could be fulfilled with personal efforts and responsibility has to be planted deep in soul and behavior. This may cover a vast array of life aspects such as problem solving, facing issues, relationship, and many more. In short, self-independent would be the cornerstone of each individual to live his or her life.

Talking about self-independent for adulthood might be a cliché for some discourses in personal development programs. But things appear more interesting when it comes to address self-independent to our early years of children. Wishing our children would live without dependence on others, an intriguing question to answer here accordingly is how to teach our children self-independent? Apparently this short article is trying to explore the right method of teaching self-independent to children in line with the conception of education approaches in common.

There are two factors to concern when we’d like to discuss about teaching self-independent to children, personal and environmental approach. Personal approach base on the understanding that each kid has got his own capability to learn, explore, and act in response to the censored input given to senses. Unfortunately most of parents especially mothers scarcely give free room to their kids to express their strong interest in doing preferred activities. In fact this can be regarded as misunderstanding toward children’s growth of psychology. Lots of modern psychology approach recommends the natural process of self-growth for children. One of them is known as Constructivism which was proposed by Swiss Psychologist Jean Piaget, emphasized the active role children play in their own mental growth as curious human being.

In practical sense whenever children tend to set up the conditions they do some activities, we have to let them try to perform their interest. What we have to do is to simply make sure that safety, disturbance, external threats are far from the area of their activities. Right responses over their misconduct would be needed for their good to support and not conversely. Hence children would construct new knowledge by applying their current knowledge structure to new experiences. Furthermore Piaget said that children would modify the existing knowledge to get much more explored and exercised. Since then we can find them grow faster than commonly assumed by parents.
